Mitt Romney - Business Insider

Politico's Dylan Byers scoops that Mitt Romney's campaign will meet with the Washington Post this afternoon to ask for a formal retraction of a June 21 story that suggested Bain Capital invested in firms that specialized in outsourcing American jobs.

They'll meet with executive editor Marcus Brauchli and other staffers at 2 p.m., Politico reported.

Romney's side didn't provide a comment to Politico, while the Washington Post said they were looking into the issue.

Here's a rundown from the June 21 story:

In its examination of SEC filings, the Post found that Romney's private equity firm Bain Capital was an early investor in firms that specialized in outsourcing. "Bain played several roles in helping these outsourcing companies, such as investing venture capital so they could grow and providing management and strategic business advice as they navigated this rapidly developing field," wrote Tom Hamburger, the author of the article. (Romney campaign officials declined to comment on Bain?s record of investing in outsourcing firms under Romney.)

UPDATE, 11:30 p.m.:?

Politico's Byers reports that the Washington Post will not retract their June 21 story about Bain Capital's outsourcing investments, despite requests from the Romney campaign.?

According to Byers, officials from the campaign met with the Post's executive editor Marcus Brauchli to ask for a retraction, but their request was rebuffed.?

"We are very confident in our reporting," a spokeswoman for the paper told Byers.?

Byers also obtained a copy of the Romney campaign's complaints against the paper. You can read it here.?

Realtor.com: Slide Into Summer on These Heat-Busting Water Slides

2012-06-26-slide1.jpg

This one goes out to everybody who's been sweating out the heat wave that's blasting the East Coast with triple-digit temps: we've rounded up five high-end water slides and swimming pools for your mind to float away to while you're broiling in the subway or swimming in the heat mirages out on I-95.

Our first stop is this inviting swimming pool in Rancho Santa Fe, California (at top.) Complete with water falls, slide, adjacent spa, and fire pits, this 6 bed, 10 bath home provides plenty of H2O to cool your burning skin -- and a wet bar to cool you inside, as well

2012-06-26-slide2.jpg

L.A. may be experiencing mild temps now, but later in the Summer, when the Valley is hot enough to melt asphalt and the city is wilting under super-heated desert winds, you can beat the heat by sliding into this pool high above Sunset Boulevard.

After you're done swimming, haul yourself out to look out over the city as you dry in the sun, or pop inside the accompanying 5 bed, 6 bath home until the sun sets and you can go on a night swim with the lights of the basin spread out all around you.

2012-06-26-slide3.jpg

If you're looking for a more rugged swimming and sliding experience, this grotto in the mountains above Malibu has got you covered. Soak in the cool ocean breezes, the beautiful views, and the poolside statuary at this 5 bed, 7 bath canyon retreat.

Of course, the biggest body of water in the world is a short drive away, so you can always surf with the dolphins and poke around the tide pools just down the PCH at Point Dume.

2012-06-26-slide5.jpg

If Orange County is more your speed, this Newport Coast pool offers a slide, a spa, and another fine example of the now-ubiquitous fire pit (the Tiki Torch of the new millenium.) This spacious patio has plenty of room for all your inland dwelling friends looking to escape the heat, and an outdoor BBQ to help you feed them.

The 6 bed, 8 bath home is also not far from Laguna Beach, if the night's festivities leave you feeling like you need your chakras cleaned the next morning.

2012-06-26-slide6.jpg

Finally, we wrap our tour with this classic Brentwood estate. Hang out in the Mediterranean-style cabana, slide into the cool waters of the pool, or rinse off L.A.'s ever-present summer dust/soot in the adjacent spa. When the sun sinks behind the Santa Monica Mountains, throw some mesquite logs in the cabana's fireplace, sip a drink, and just tell yourself "It may be hot, but at least it's a dry heat."

Great Guide On How To Get A Good Auto Insurance Quote ...

When shopping around for car insurance, ask the company if they give a discount for insuring multiple cars with them. If your spouse has insured their car with a different company, or if you have multiple vehicles yourself, it typically makes sense to have all household cars insured by the same company if it will cost less.

If you?re involved in a car accident, it is usually a good idea to call the police and file a report, just to make sure you satisfy any requirements of your insurance company. Of course, there are certain situations that always require police involvement, such as when there are injuries or one of the drivers flees the scene. However, there are other times when you may need documentation by the police to substantiate your claim. This can happen if the driver who caused the accident refuses to provide you with his insurance information or if he admits that he doesn?t have any insurance. A police report also contains a very detailed description of the incident, which is helpful when your mind is occupied by other factors, such as the damage to your car and your concern about the safety of your passengers.

Do the math before filing an insurance claim to see if it is worth it. Insurance companies love to raise rates on drivers who file claims, it?s the nature of the industry. Avoid making claims that aren?t going to net you much money back. If you are filing a claim for two hundred dollars, is it really worth the extra premiums you?ll pay in the future?

If your goal is to lower the cost of your car insurance premium, remember that insurance companies often charge more to insure cars that are flashier or that cost more to repair. Having a low-profile vehicle, that is unlikely to get stolen, can often dramatically lower your rates.

Your teenage driver?s insurance will cost you much more than yours for a while, but if they took any formalized driving instruction, be sure to mention it when shopping for a quote or adding them to your policy. Discounts are frequently available for driving instruction, but you can get even bigger discounts if your teen took a defensive driving class or other specialized driving instruction course.

If you travel often and use rental cars during your travels, it might be beneficial to opt for including coverage for rental cars on your personal auto insurance. The amount charged by car rental agencies varies, but at times can be quite a significant increase in the amount you pay for your car rental.

An important consideration in securing affordable auto insurance is the condition of your credit record. It is quite common for insurers to review the credit reports of applicants in order to determine policy price and availability. Therefore, always make certain your credit report is accurate and as clean as possible before shopping for insurance.

Figure out what the minimum requirements are for your state. This is especially important if you have an older car and are planning on only purchasing the bare minimum coverage that is out there. This could keep you from breaking the law and save you a big hassle in the long run.

To lower your overall cost consider paying your insurance premium in full. Many insurance companies tack on fees for customers who make payments month to month. Your company may offer several payment option plans, but generally the less payments you make the more money you save. Some companies even offer an additional discount for enrolling in automatic renewal.

When obtaining a quote for auto insurance, have a list of your car?s safety features, this will qualify you to receive a discount. If your vehicle has full airbags or an installed security system, you may be eligible for a discount. At the same time, if you have a young driver with good grades in your home, you may qualify for discounts based on driver characteristics. Have this information handy so you can ask about all possible discounts.

If you are just buying a car for jetting around town, see if your insurance company offers discounts for low mileage driving. The less you drive, the less likely you are to have an accident that your insurance will have to pay for. Most companies recognize this with discount offers.

As you now may be starting to understand, the auto insurance purchasing process does not need to be as painful as it once was. The important thing to remember is to explore your options. By following the tips and advice from this article, you will help to ensure that you have the best experience, while getting the best deal possible.

App eases public transit woes for blind and disabled riders

Featured

12 hrs.

CookieJa

Are you your own worst enemy? If so, the following gadgets might be able to help you overcome some?relatively minor shortcomings. That is to... Read more

3 hrs.

Researchers in Barcelona have created an app that may prove useful to riders of public transit who are blind, deaf or otherwise disabled. OnTheBus hooks into GPS and transit data and alerts the user where and when they need to board, signal and disembark.

While transit systems make some allowances for riders who may be unable to see or hear when the bus arrives, or they themselves have arrived at their stop, there are doubtless many riders who could use some additional help.

After checking a few routes with the user, the app will direct them to the nearest bus stop and inform them when their bus should be arriving. Once on, it will tell them how many stops they will be riding for, and tells them when to activate the "stop" cord or button. And once they've returned to the pavement, it continues guiding them to their destination with walking directions.

Users don't have to type, either: The app will accept voice input or writing with symbols, and a separate interface was designed for people with severe visual impairment or total blindness. You can watch a demonstration of the app below; it's in Spanish, but the functionality is easy to understand:

It only works with buses for now, as the GPS signal would be blocked in subway systems. But the researchers are looking to expand into other transit styles, and are even considering adding augmented reality features to help people locate stops ? for instance, after determining the user's position and orientation, the phone's camera could display the bus stop through the landscape and give turn-by-turn directions.

The OnTheBus database currently supports buses in Barcelona, Madrid, and Rome, in several languages. The makers hope to expand it to other cities and languages, though beyond the next few their plans are not being stated. The app is available now for Android.

Jack Osbourne Opens Up About MS Diagnosis

Jack Osbourne's MS diagnosis is the subject of People's new cover story.

In the magazine, he says he knew something was wrong last month.

His vision began failing, he says. "I couldn't see anything in front of me," Osbourne, 26, recalls, explaining that when he sought medical help for that problem, he received a shocking diagnosis - he suffers from multiple sclerosis.

Jack Osbourne Picture

MS was to blame for his vision loss - 80 percent in his right eye - Jack says. He's now beginning medication and adopting a healthier diet regimen to help reduce various symptoms of the disease, which attacks the central nervous system.

It can affect vision, movement and cognition, but luckily, his vision has already improved. "It's just one of those things you take as it comes," says Jack.

"It's all about your outlook."

His mom, Sharon Osbourne, opened up in an emotional interview as well, saying: "The first thing Ozzy and I asked ourselves was, 'What did we do wrong?'"

Nothing, but they're doing all the right things in standing by their son during a difficult time ... not that we'd expect anything less. Be well, Jack!

Report: Russia sending naval ships to Syria in case of evacuation

Russia plans to dispatch two ships carrying marines to its naval base in Tartous, reportedly to protect Russian citizens and evacuate them if needed.?

Russia plans to send two naval ships carrying a ?large? number of marines to the Syrian port of Tartous where it maintains a naval base, according to a new report. The ships will reportedly protect Russian citizens and evacuate them, along with military supplies, if needed.

One of the ships can carry up to 150 landing troops and tanks, reports Agence France-Presse. Russians security officials have yet to confirm the report, which was originally published by Russia?s Interfax news.

?The crews of The Nikolai Filchenkov and The Tsezar Kunikov and SB-15 rescue tug together with marines on board are able to ensure security of Russian nationals and evacuate part of the property of the logistical support base if need be,? said a Russian official in the Interfax article, cited in an AFP article.

Russia has maintained a controversial, supportive relationship with the embattled Syrian regime, blocking international efforts to sanction the country and providing arms. In the past, Russian military advisers in Syria have trained the military how to use Russian weapons. Syria has traditionally served as Russia's main foothold in the Middle East, and Moscow is concerned about Islamist takeovers wiping away their longstanding relationships with leaders in Syria and the region.

If the ships deploy to Syria, it may raise suspicions among Western nations who?ve sought to reduce Russian support for Syria. At the UN, Russia has stymied efforts to pass tougher resolutions against the Syrian regime.?

Officially Russia says its longstanding support of Syria stems from its desire to avoid regime change, especially one supported by a Western military intervention as happened in Libya, writes an editorial in South Africa's Independent Online. Its concern is most likely that regime change could introduce a new, Islamist government that would be less stable and less warm to Moscow. This fear is likely to be magnified now that Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt is the apparent victor in the country?s presidential election.

mooshkatoo: Looking for Advice: Prepping Em for a Little Brother?

I?m a little concerned.

Emmy has been the sun, the moon and the stars of our family for the past 20 months. Our family time has been primarily focused on her needs, and giving her plenty of love and attention.

The new baby?s arrival is going to bring change. Our family dynamic is going to change. As much as I would like to tell myself that even when the baby arrives, I will be able to provide Em with the same amount of love and attention as I am able to today, I know that is not really true. I know that time and attention will need to be shared, and that Emmy will see and feel the difference.

I have tried explaining to Em that I have a baby growing inside me. On a few occasions, Emmy has kissed my belly, as if acknowledging the baby?s presence. On other occasions, Emmy has pulled my shirt back down over my belly and said ?Bye bye, Baby!?

Mmmm? this is going to be tough.

I want to prepare Emmy for being a big sister. I have read and researched what other parents have done. They have read books about babies with their toddlers in the months leading up to the baby?s arrival. They have bought their toddlers baby dolls and played ?family? to help the toddler get acquainted with a baby?s needs.? They have involved their toddlers in preparing the baby?s room and belongings, so they start understanding that change is on the horizon.

This all makes sense, of course.

But Emmy hardly ever sits through an entire book.

?And while she likes putting her baby doll to bed, she also REALLY seems to like throwing her doll on the ground for amusement.

And I have no idea yet as to what we are going to do with the baby room to make it ?ready? for our little monkey (except that in an ideal world, I would love to create a giant wall hanging for the nursery, with a tree and sunshine and birds with pretty beaded eyes and lots of little flowers on the ground? ah, if only there were 4 more hours in a day that I could dedicate to this project).

I know I have plenty of time to prepare Em for what is coming. I know that once my belly really starts popping out, and the baby starts moving and kicking, it will be easier for me to talk to Emmy about her little brother. I know that by the time the baby arrives, Emmy might have the patience to sit through an entire book about becoming an older sister, and she might better understand why it is not so great to throw the baby doll on the ground. And maybe in the coming months I will even have a better plan for the baby room, and can involve Em in the preparations.

But I am wondering how others have dealt with this kind of experience. Did you spend much time prepping your first born for the arrival of a sibling? Did they respond well? How did your child react when you brought the new baby home? How have you and your family adjusted to a new dynamic? Any suggestions on how we can help Em prepare?

Mhhmm.^^ Go ahead, I'll reserve her for ya.

Alright, great! Anyway, could I expand upon the "power to create blades" a bit? I was thinking making it a power of compressing her own "energy" into or through objects, allowing her a wider and more useful range of abilities, such as physical reinforcement, the ability to channel energy through her swords and into the air to create razor wind, and so on and so forth, with the highest level of her ability being the creation of swords out of pure energy.

Also, all the good pictures I found that I could use happen to involve, long story short, dog ears. Is there any possible way to get around this - I.E., Angels can reshape their bodies at will like they do to remove their wings, and my character took on a somewhat animal-ized form due to a bit of confusion involving Human culture which could result in epic lulz if done right - Or should I just find new images and such?

I like the idea aboutut the powers, and as for the pictures, you could always add that she doesn't actually have dog ears, and just to ignore them.

Eh, while that might work for the main picture itself, the avatar has them too, which would make things start to get awkward. I'll have to find a new avatar, then. Give me a few minutes.

Wait! I dont want to trouble you... We can always still do the "reshape their bodies" thing. I kinda know where you're coming from. The picture for my character's not blue, like it described in the intro. He's more purple. So I'm just using my imagination for that one.

Also, considering she has "Kenetic" abilities, should she have a specific one, or have a wide range of them? There is a looong list of Kenetic abilities, so I was just wondering c:

Sorry. My image broke for a while there. Fixed it, though. Also, if you guys are anime fans - not to detract from this roleplay with my shameless advertising - you should check out my RP, A War of Titans: Peace of Mind. It's mecha genre and not fantasy, but I think it could turn out to be pretty awesome. =D Anyway, I only need three other people to make it work out, but nobody seems to have noticed it yet. If any one of you would join it, I'd be much obliged. =D

Is Google Acquiring HP?s WebOS Enyo Team?

There are reports doing the rounds suggesting that Google might be poaching HP?s team working on Enyo, which is a webOS HTML5 based framework that debuted on the TouchPad. The news puts a huge question mark on the future of the ?Open webOS? project that HP had promised.

HP is working on a project to make the webOS software an open source platform and the Enyo team is supposed to be a team at the centre of the development of the project. As per HP?s strategy, they are supposed to offer version 1 by late 2012.

HP Enyo webOS

Also when it comes to the team?s move to Google it is unclear right now as to which team these guys would be a part of. With Android?s design Chief Matias Duarte having been previously associated with Palm during its Pre launch, there is a chance that the Enyo team might be a part of the Android development platform. The webOS platform though not highly successful, is considered to be an innovative platform and there is surely a thing or two for Android to learn and adopt from it.

Besides the team can also be part of the Chrome group, where web apps (read HTML5 based apps) are central to its development, which is exactly what the Enyo team?s core functioning at HP was. It?s also believed that though it?s not the entire team that?s leaving HP, Matt McNulty who led the Enyo team along with its core developers responsible for the entire coding for the platform will be leaving.

HP has not commented on these rumors but has reaffirmed their commitment to the Open webOS project and reassured that the project is on schedule. There has been no official statement from Google on this front as well.

Google goes cancer: Researchers use search engine algorithm to find cancer biomarkers

Google goes cancer: Researchers use search engine algorithm to find cancer biomarkers

Friday, May 18, 2012

The strategy used by Google to decide which pages are relevant for a search query can also be used to determine which proteins in a patient's cancer are relevant for the disease progression. Researchers from Dresden University of Technology, Germany, have used a modified version of Google's PageRank algorithm to rank about 20,000 proteins by their genetic relevance to the progression of pancreatic cancer. In their study, published in PLoS Computational Biology, they found seven proteins that can help to assess how aggressive a patient's tumor is and guide the clinician to decide if that patient should receive chemotherapy or not.

The researcher's own version of the Google algorithm has been used in this study to find new cancer biomarkers, which are molecules produced by cancer cells. Biomarkers can help to detect cancer earlier in body fluids or directly in the cancer tissue obtained in an operation or biopsy. Finding these biomarkers is often difficult and time consuming. Another problem is that markers found in different studies for the same types of cancer almost never overlap.

This problem has been circumvented using the Google strategy, which takes into account the content of a web page and also how these pages are connected via hyperlinks. With this strategy as the model, the authors made use of the fact that proteins in a cell are connected through a network of physical and regulatory interactions; the 'protein Facebook' so to speak.

"Once we added the network information in our analysis, our biomarkers became more reproducible," said Christof Winter, the paper's first author. Using this network information and the Google Algorithm, a significant overlap was found with an earlier study from the University of North Carolina. There, a connection was made with a protein which can assess aggressiveness in pancreatic cancer.

Although the new biomarkers seem to mark an improvement over currently used diagnostic tools, they are far from perfect and still need to be validated in a larger follow-up study before they can be used in clinical practice. It remains an open problem to turn these insights into novel drugs which slow down cancer progression. A first step in this direction is the group's cooperation with the Dresden-based biotech company RESprotect, who are running a clinical trial on a pancreas cancer drug.

TU Dresden is a leading German university, whose Center for Regenerative Therapies was awarded excellence status in the national excellence initiative. The work was a cooperation between the bioinformatics group of Prof. Dr. Michael Schroeder and the medical groups of Dr. Christian Pilarsky and Prof. Robert Gr?tzmann.
